When Austin is arrested for shoplifting and becomes the prime suspect in a series of bomb threats at the local middle school, Megan’s immediate response is, “Not my kid.” What does it mean to be a good parent?  How far should a mother go to protect her child?

Not My Kid … eBook Mary Billiter

When I read, it is for escapism or to numb my rambling brain so I can fall asleep. This book did not fit my expectation. Instead it hooked me immediately, demanding I keep reading, keeping me up into the early morning hours. While challenging me as a mother with the silent question: "What would you do if this happened to your son?" Although I could not envision this happening to me, I know what it is to raise sons that are smart and challenging of authority, so I could relate to the mother. Billeter's hook sunk into unanswered questions. I had to keep reading to find out where her story was headed. Writing from the character's perspective enabled the hook to sink in even deeper, however it was also the major flaw of this body of work. I found character development to be lacking. I wanted more depth. I wanted more background. Not being familiar with the juvenile court system, I was left adrft, not understanding the full impact underlying the few descriptive words used in the last chapter. At the very end,, with the last words spoken, my first reaction was "huh? what goes on here?" The ending was much too abrupt.

Not My Kid … eBook Mary Billiter Reviews

Loved this book
It's a real page turner! I didn't want to put it down and many nights stayed up late reading it. Definitely would recommend!!
I liked this book. I highly recommend. It is not what I normally read, but it kept me interested the entire time. It's fast paced and was very hard to put down. The story was well thought out, the characters real to me and the plot a realistic one to this day and age. I liked that I could see the story from different points of views, that really helped bring me into the issues each of them had. If you are looking for an intriguing story in a world that is far from perfect, or really just a good book, this is the one for you.
I loved this book. Mary has such character development. You really feel like you really know the characters personally. I love how she gets into their thoughts and feelings. It really pulls the reader in. Makes you understand what makes them tick and how we think and perceive things on all levels of relationships. She keeps it suspenseful. I can't wait to pick it up and continue where I left off. I love authors who can do this. I hate muddling through books waiting for them to get better. Mary starts off at full throttle and the book remains that way throughout. Great ending. Love to feel good at the end. I think Mary is an incredible author. Love and admire her talent and style. I double the five star rating!
We all want to believe that"not my kid' would apply in a situation like this.

Unfortunately, anybody's kid might do anything given the right set of circumstances. Peer pressure sometimes is the most powerful motivation, negating even the training and discipline of a loving home. Raising a teen ager is never easy, but when the use of drugs becomes part of the equation, it is every parent's nightmare. I have been here and done this and this book took my breath away with it's honesty and realism.

I loved this book and related to the emotions felt by a mother grieving for her little boy.
Just beautifully done!!!
Told 1st person from the perspective of several people, a story about a troubled youth. Well written but I just didn't feel invested in the story. Megan was a bit annoying, Cameron was kind of unsympathetic and the plot was thin. This novel tip toes around domestic violence and its impact on families, esp. children. It also does not really resolve Cameron's dilemma. The author should have stuck to the core characters and put a little more jazz into the novel as I honestly fail to believe an ex abuser could hold down the job position he had with little to no consequences. Overall an ok novel but nothing to get excited over.
This book was extremely painful for me to read because I, myself, have a troubled child and I have not been able to help him. The story is crafted in a style I'm not usually fond of but talking in first person works for these folks. All the emotions are real and the fears are even more real. Altogether a good read very hard to put down until you read the last word.
